How to install shellcheck

Shellcheck is a linter for portability and correctness in shell code. What follows is background, not a walkthrough. The authoritative version always lives with the project's own team.

How it reaches a system

The route varies. Some projects publish to system repositories, some to a registry, some only as source that a dedicated build tool consumes.

Who is behind it

Day-to-day direction belongs to the maintainers. They set the roadmap, cut releases, and decide which platforms stay supported.

Worth confirming early

Establish which platforms the current release actually targets. Support ranges shift, and the newest release is frequently not the one suited to an older machine.

If something looks wrong

Surprises here are rarely the project's fault. Ordering inside the environment decides which copy wins, and that ordering is easy to get wrong.

About this site

This is a notes-only site. Projects stay with their maintainers; nothing is reproduced here.

On reading release notes

Release notes are the cheapest way to catch a breaking change before it surprises you. They usually list platform shifts and removed defaults in the first few lines.
